Our original incorporation papers
stated that our purpose was "...to promote interest in and accumulate and
disseminate knowledge concerning the trapping of fur bearing animals among
person interested therein." Education is one of our goals and we believe that
can be accomplished in a number of ways.
One of the ways we educate is by
publishing a monthly magazine entitled The Fur Taker. We
look at the magazine as a "tool of teaching" through the articles written by
experts as well as everyday outdoorsmen in the fields of trapping, hunting, and
related activities. Reports from chapters/affiliates, officers, and
general activities of the organization are also included.
We also host the only known
college of its kind, the
FTA Trapper's College. We are able to teach proper and ethical methods of trapping
from generations to generations going back to the forefathers of the
industry.
FTA uses the Chapter/Affiliate concept
as our means of local organization. Wherever possible, we like to build
chapter/affiliates from the local grassroots level. Many of these
chapter/affiliates host monthly and/or semi-annual meetings. As a member
or interested sportsmen you can attend and learn as well as socialize with
fellow sportsmen. Contacts for these organizations are included in The
Fur Taker, our monthly publication. The Fur Taker of America National
Rendezvous, a national convention, is held yearly at various locations
throughout the United States. Check elsewhere on this website or in The
Fur Taker for details.
We are affiliated with the United States Sportsmen's Alliance
(USSA), International Association of Fish and Wildlife Agencies, National
Trapper's Association, International Trapper's Federation, Fur Institute of
Canada, and are involved with the BMP Committee. A representative has been
appointed from FTA to sit on the governing body of each of these
organizations. They are also invited to have a representative sit on our
governing body as well. In this way the communication lines are always
open. Information is then conveyed to our membership through our publication, The Fur Taker.
