Fur Takers of
America takes a bold new step:
The
Outdoor Channel
The FTA
Governing Board recently voted unanimously to take on a
bold new project: they will purchase a series of
segments on the Outdoor Channel, with Chuck Sykes of the
Management Advantage Company. The trapping community
will have thirteen two-minute educational spots, each
airing for a total of six times, which will explain how
important trapping is to overall wildlife management.
With the re-showing of the series, in total there will
be 78 segments over a six-month period in mainstream
cable TV. The total of over two hours of these short
FTA Furbearer Management Moments will be airing on
the Outdoor Channel, which boasts of over twenty-eight
million subscriber households. The target audience,
obviously, is the outdoor community who are viewers of
the Outdoor Channel—Duck hunters, deer hunters, quail
hunters, etc. More specifically, they hope to address
the land manager; people who manage properties for
enhanced wildlife.
Trapping is a critical tool for wildlife management, and
communicating that is one of the FTA’s key missions, but
they also plan to do a segment or segments that
generally address the benefits of fur and the fur
industry, from trappers to garment manufacturers, and
everything in between.
The
exact footage of the short episodes is still under
review, but one of the primary missions in the project
is to educationally address the need for trapping, and
how important successful trapping is to all outdoor user
groups. Regulated, humane trapping can have a dramatic
effect on the management of all wildlife, and that
message needs to be told. (The topics under
consideration might be oversimplified by such catch
phrases as, “Want more quail?...You need skunk and
possum trappers.” “Want more deer?...You need coyote and
bobcat trappers.” “Want to protect public safety?...You
need to trap to maintain healthy populations of all
wildlife in balance.”) They will also be promoting such
things as ways to learn how to trap, how to get educated
about modern trapping techniques, etc.
Of
course another primary message is what a great product
fur is, for the environment, for the economy, and for
wildlife in general. It is a renewable, sustainable
resource, etc. The outdoor community can and should be
one of our most important allies in the battle to
preserve trapping as a wildlife management tool, and to
preserve our rich trapping heritage.
They will be publishing exact times and dates for the
airing of the episodes later this fall, and programming
will begin showing in January of 2010. Anyone wishing to
contribute to this project should send any financial
support to the Treasurer, Carol Krumwiede—clearly mark
any correspondence or checks as “FOR THE OUTDOOR CHANNEL
PROJECT”
